The road toward El Cotillo
A simple drive west from Corralejo — lagoons, lava, and the kind of Atlantic light that makes you slow down without trying.
Leave Corralejo toward El Cotillo and the island thins out. The dunes give way to darker ground. The road is not dramatic; it does not need to be. You pass small settlements, low walls of volcanic stone, and stretches where the wind is the only conversation.
Lagoons and empty hours
People come for the lagoons — calm pockets of water when the ocean outside is working harder. On a quiet weekday you can sit with a book and hear almost nothing but wind and water. Bring water, respect the rocks, leave no trace. This is not a theme park stop; it is a piece of coast that still feels like itself.
Further on, El Cotillo holds a different pace from Corralejo: fishing boats, a harbour that still means fishing, evenings that stretch. It is close enough for an afternoon, far enough to feel like you left town.
How to do it well
- Go early or late if you can. Midday sun here is honest.
- Check the wind. North Fuerteventura rarely hides it.
- Do not rush the drive back. The light on the return is often the best part.
A day like this is why people book homes with kitchens and outdoor space — you come back sandy, hungry, and glad you are not packing a suitcase for a hotel breakfast the next morning.
